7 October 2023: Remembering the Lives Taken

A day of remembrance

On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led attackers struck communities and other locations in southern Israel. Around 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage into Gaza. These figures describe the scale of the attack, but they cannot describe a single person's life. Behind every name were relationships, plans, ordinary habits and people who expected to see them again. This page is dedicated to those who were killed and to the families and survivors whose lives were changed.

More than a number

A memorial should leave room for the person before the tragedy: a favourite song, a friendship, a family meal, a profession, a small act of kindness. Those murdered included people of different ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Remembering them means resisting the reduction of a life to a photograph from the day of an attack. Where families share biographies, their own words should guide how those lives are presented.

Standing beside families and survivors

Grief has no uniform timetable. Anniversaries, birthdays and ordinary sounds can bring back painful memories. Public ceremonies matter, but so does patient, practical support: listening without demanding a story, respecting privacy, and offering help that the person actually wants. This remembrance also acknowledges the experience of abduction and captivity, the anguish of relatives and the work of those who assisted victims. It does not make a claim about the current status of any individual hostage.

Memory without hatred

The deliberate killing of civilians and taking of hostages must be condemned clearly. The responsibility of perpetrators does not become the collective guilt of Palestinians, Muslims or any other population. Remembering Israeli victims and caring about Palestinian civilians are compatible moral commitments. A memorial can be firm about the crime while refusing to turn grief into a call for revenge against people who did not commit it.

Preserving testimony responsibly

Read testimony with care. Do not share graphic images, identifying information or personal stories without considering the wishes of victims and families. Separate confirmed information from rumours and distinguish historical reports from current updates. The links below provide context and further reading; Wikipedia is an introductory reference, not a substitute for individual testimony or primary documentation. May the memory of those killed remain a blessing, and may the living find support, dignity and a future in safety.
